TRECC TECHNOLOGY UPDATE What can TRECC and its technologies do for you? The Technology Research, Education and Commercialization Center (TRECC) showcases collaboration technologies developed and employed by the University of Illinois (both the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses). Organizations may make arrangements to use the Center facilities for the purposes of hosting meetings, conferences, seminars, training classes, workshops and other group sessions. Several meeting venues are available suitable for group sizes ranging from large (40 - 60 people) to small (3- 12 people). Because the space is designed to be reconfigured as necessary, room arrangements are flexible. In addition, there is office space available for use on a short-term basis. In addition to current resident technologies, the Personal Augmented Reality Immersive System (PARIS) arrived at the TRECC facility in December, 2004. PARIS is a projection based "augmented" virtual reality display, enhanced with haptics or forced-feedback device. An entrepreneur is currently using the system to develop demonstrations of his company's software simulation technologies. Also in 2004, broadband access to global research networks was upgraded to to a dedicated 1 Gb fiber connection. Other current resident technologies include high-resolution display walls, wireless network connectivity, laptop computers for use with training classes, multiple Access Grid nodes™ for group-to-group collaboration over the computational grid, and multiple POLYCOM® video-conferencing systems. The TRECC facility also houses a 26-processor high-performance computing cluster with 4.5-terabyte storage capacity; several researchers and small business owners are using the computing cluster for development of their projects/products. TRECC also houses a 16-processor high-performance graphics cluster with 15-panel tiled display, optimized (3072 x 6400 pixel resolution) for visual simulations. A touch-panel audio/video switching and control system provides routing and matrix layout of all AV signals throughout the facility, and an Apple G5 video editing station is also available. The Continuum, a next-generation "planning room" or "war room," contains multi-party audio/video conferencing (both Polycom and AccessGrid conferencing are supported; AGAVE (Access Grid Augmented Virtual Environment) passive stereo virtual reality display for visualizing three-dimensional data sets, scalable LCD tiled display for visualizing high resolution data sets; and a whiteboard (a plasma screen enhanced with a Matisse Smartboard to provide pen-based input). TRECC supports initiatives to enable government, business and educational organizations' understanding of the emerging technologies housed in the Center. The Center's staff can assist organizations in adopting and using TRECC resident technologies, facilitating the adoption and utilization of the technologies in an organization's venue and/or the organization may choose to use the Center's resources.
