FROM THE PROGRAM MANAGER

Technological development is the engine of the new economy, but it comes with its own rules and paradigms, not all of them well-understood. The fundamental concept of TRECC is the recognition that the development of new technology is a multi-stage process; that each step requires different skill sets; and that these stages themselves can be studied, analyzed, and optimized. With TRECC, the Office of Naval Research has joined with UIUC to support fundamental research that leads to discovery of new ideas for technology development and new applications of technologies.

There are many benefits to this partnership. Through its participation in TRECC, the ONR learns of groundbreaking emerging technologies directly from the innovators in academia and in the commercial/private sector. By making prototypical research technology available to the ONR and to the business world while it is under development, TRECC allows UIUC researchers to receive valuable feedback, guiding the development of useful, beneficial technology. And industries have access to new technologies without having to wait for the traditional technology commercialization process to be completed.

In the coming months TRECC Newslink will showcase some of the research with which we are engaged through multi-year collaborations -- very fundamental research representing technology enhancements for generations to come.
